Half Moon Bay to Receive 140,000 Baby Salmon

On Monday, April 15th, volunteers from the Coastside Fishing Club will be receiving the first 140,000 of 420,000 juvenile salmon for acclimation and later release to the ocean from Half Moon Bay's Pillar Point Harbor.

The Coastside Fishing Club will raise 420,000 baby salmon this spring and then release them to the ocean. This effort aims to increase the number of adult salmon in the ocean fishery, primarily in 2015. The baby salmon are coming from the state-run Feather River hatchery. They'll be transported in two tanker trucks that will release the fish into a specially constructed floating net pen that will be anchored in Pillar Point Harbor. There the baby salmon will be fed for one to two weeks before release. The fish are expected to be strong at the time of release and have higher survival rates than other same-year hatchery salmon released in the Central Valley. Young salmon have a very difficult time swimming through the Sacramento Delta on the way to the ocean. In 2015 it is hoped these adult salmon will be drawn back to waters near Half Moon Bay to be caught by local anglers, both recreational and commercial.

About Coastside Fishing Club

Coastside Fishing Club is a community of recreational fishermen sharing in the common goal of improving the fishery, sharing knowledge with the younger generations, and being more conservation minded to help preserve our resources for future generations to enjoy. Their activities include annual derbies, annual dinner, junior angler derby, and club long range trips. They actively support the Tyee Club salmon grow out pens and other local conservation measures. They have given science study grants to graduate fishery departments to study important recreational angling science related policies.

If you're looking to target rainbows and kokanee, now's the perfect time to hit Don Pedro Lake and New Melones!

Monte Smith just updated us that the rainbows and kokanee are on a great bite at both lakes. Monte says the king salmon are also biting now at Don Pedro.

And if you're looking for some striper action in Gold Country, Monte tells us, "I would not waste any time getting in on the action on the stripers at Hogan. These fish put up a great fight on light tackle."
